If you are in search of wildlife, Zippel Bay is where you will find the endangered Piping Plover and it is a paradise for bird lovers. Start walking on the sandy shore of the Lake of the woods, follow the trail all the way to Zippel Bay where on a clear day you can actually see the curve of the earth. This is the place to kick back and watch the Sandhill Cranes, take in the views and just relax.


The true adventurer could start at the beginning of the great Mississippi River in a boat and take it to the The Gulf of Mexico. Itasca State Park also offers a scenic drive through the 32,000 acres taking you back 8,000 years in history.

Plant lovers will find old growth forest the last logged tree was in 1920. There are fourteen plants that grow here that are on the endangered species list. It is the oldest state park in Minnesota and its biggest problem is there are too many white tailed deer and they eat all the small pines. There is a population of both wolves and bald eagles for your viewing pleasure.

There are 157 lakes in the area you can rent a canoe or small boat for your enjoyment. Hiking here you can connect to the 32,000 mile North Country Scenic Trail that runs from New York to South Dakota. Camping is available in the area with 185 campsites within the park.

Lake Louise was donated to the State of Minnesota and has remained under is care since the 1800’s. Preserving the wildlife and has some plant life on the endangered species list. You will see why it is famous for it’s hardwood forest and see wildlife up close and personal. Refresh yourself on a hot summers day with a swim and sit on a sandy beach and just relax. The campsites in Lake Louise give you great views. When your ready to take a long hike there are 12 miles of hiking trails.
